IUOE Local 49 has named Sen. Jim Abeler, R-Anoka, an honorary member of the union, in recognition of his long career in public service supporting the building and construction trades.

Business Manager Jason George presented Abeler with the award July 12 at Local 49’s Minneapolis union hall. It’s the highest honor the union gives policymakers who demonstrate outstanding commitment to tradesmen and tradeswomen, and to the projects that make Minnesota a great place to live.

“Sen. Abeler is a longtime friend of Local 49,” George said. “He’s a strong supporter of apprenticeship programs that are training the next generation of skilled tradespeople. He stood up with us against so-called ‘right to work’ when it mattered. And he’s championed bipartisan infrastructure funding that puts our members to work across the state, including securing money to rebuild Highway 10. His career is proof of what you can accomplish when you put aside partisan differences and build the projects that improve life for all Minnesotans.”
