Mine will create 700 plus jobs; 49ers praise Oberstar, Klobuchar and Franken for supporting project

St. Anthony, MN – Forty-Niners, along with other members of organized labor, jammed the house at two public meetings held by the DNR recently to show support and hear details about a projected PolyMet mining and milling facility in Hoyt Lakes. Specifically, the public meetings outlined the environmental impact statement on the project.

Prior to these meetings, elected officials expressed their support for the project, saying PolyMet has taken a responsible environmental approach to delivering an innovative system of mining and manufacturing metals that will drive our future economy.

The mine’s construction will provide 300 jobs over two years. Once fully operational, PolyMet will employ 400 people.

“On behalf of Local 49, I would like to commend Senators Klobuchar and Franken and Rep. Oberstar for their leadership and courage in ensuring this major job-producing project moves forward.” stated Glen Johnson, Local 49 Business Manager.

Two nights in a row, 49ers from all over the state traveled to meetings--first to Aurora, then Blaine--to show their support for the project. Nearly 1,000 members of organized labor attended each meeting.

“From letters and petitions to showing up for these meetings, our members have proven just how critical PolyMet’s 700 anticipated jobs are to 49ers and the Iron Range,” said Butch Pariseau, Local 49’s president. “When PolyMet executives and elected officials see that kind of grassroots movement, they know labor is committed to the project’s success.”

“It’s been a tough year. We need jobs,” said Teresa DuMarce, an Operator from Virginia, who submitted that simple, but powerful comment in writing just prior to the Blaine meeting.

The public comment session will remain open until February. The DNR and Army Corps of Engineers will address those comments and decide to approve the impact statement or order revisions.
