Prestigious Appointment for Local 49 to Minnesota AFL-CIO Executive Board
Glen Johnson’s work to improve training, ensure quality health care and expand membership key achievements in gaining post
St. Anthony, MN — Today marks a proud moment for the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 49. Business Manager Glen Johnson is being appointed as a Minnesota AFL-CIO Executive Board member, and begins his service immediately. This new position will not affect Johnson’s full-time duties and day-to-day responsibilities with Local 49.
“I’m honored and humbled that my fellow brothers and sisters in organized labor have chosen me to serve in this leadership position,” Johnson said. “We’re at a critical juncture in Minnesota when it comes to creating jobs and digging out of this economic downturn. On this board, I will be a strong advocate fighting to ensure that Minnesota’s working men and women have good-paying jobs.”
Since being elected business manager of Local 49 six years ago, Johnson has always put his members first. By improving the union‘s training program, he gave workers the tools to make themselves more valuable in the job market. He’s worked hard to organize non-union companies and negotiate better labor agreements. Most impressive in these times of rising health care costs, Johnson has worked with medical specialists to save the union’s health care plan millions of dollars, while providing top-quality care to members and their families.
Johnson replaces Dick Lally, IUOE Local 70 business manager on the board. This appointment also gives Local 49 a valuable voice in choosing the Minnesota AFL-CIO’s next president, following Ray Waldron’s decision to retire this September.
