The International Union of Operating Engineers Local 49 proudly welcomed gubernatorial candidate Margaret Anderson Kelliher on June 16 at the Local 49 Training Center in Hinckley. Kelliher made the stop as part of her “Leave No Stone Unturned” jobs tour.

In the last two years, Local 49 and Summit Academy OIC , a nonprofit educational and vocational training center that empowers adults residing in the most economically depressed neighborhoods in the Twin Cities to become educated, employed, contributing members of the community, has led efforts to make sure that improved diversity is achieved responsibly.

Kelliher, the Local 49 endorsed candidate for governor met with instructors and students at the training facility to witness how Local 49 and Summit Academy are working together to provide new employment opportunities to minorities. As part of her visit, Kelliher observed students in a mining exercise, tried her hand at the crane simulator and rode co-pilot with Summit Academy student Mari Simmons in an off-road truck.

“We hear a lot of talk about diversity, said Kelliher. “This program is a model partnership at work.”

The hands-on, high tech 20 week program offers 15 weeks of classroom, online and simulator training at Summit’s Minneapolis facility and then five additional weeks training on heavy equipment.  This programs historic first class is scheduled to complete this comprehensive course and graduate Friday, July 9th.
